Mind you its wise to build up right to rule before making a faction You can keep all the castles and towns you own that way and just have to beat back the attacks from the former faction. Then eventually when I feel confident enough just take stuff over until the king denies the request to keep it. What I generally do is join a faction as a vassal and get some castles/cities and build large garrisons in each. I would bring a full rhodok/any top tier troop you find army and then deposit them all in the castle, and run off to get as many swadian militia/footmen as you can and return quickly. Its really a numbers game, so the better your surrounding relations with villages the more likely you will be able to gather enough peasants in time. Make sure when you do take a castle or town that whatever marshal of that realm has just been defeated, this will prevent the enemy from gathering a large force to retake the castle for some time.
